Ruinen is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe, with 2,710 inhabitants. Until 1 January 1998, Ruinen was an independent municipality.
From the Middle Ages until the French period, Ruinen was a high seigneury, referred to as the Lordship of Ruinen. In a deed of 1139 Otto van Ruinen is mentioned as one of the servants of the bishop of Utrecht. In 1140, Benedictine monks founded a monastery with an accompanying Lady Chapel. The monastery was later moved to Dickninge.
From 1811 to 1998 Ruinen was an independent municipality. On 1 January 1998, the largest part of Ruinen became part of the new municipality of De Wolden, smaller parts were added to the municipalities of Hoogeveen and Westerveld.
The village has traditionally had an agricultural character (cattle breeding and arable farming).
Surrounding towns are Havelte, Ruinerwold and Ansen. North of Ruinen lies the 3700-hectare Dwingelderveld National Park.
Ruinen has a library, a public primary school, a sports hall with sports fields and a swimming pool. The local football club is VV Ruinen.
Ruinen has several restaurants, shops, hotels and campsites and holiday accommodations. There is a Tourist Information Point (TIP) on the Brink.
