Zwiggelte is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. The village is located northwest of Westerbork and has about 300 inhabitants in the core and 420 inhabitants including the outlying areas. Zwiggelte is located on the Drenthe Highlands and is an active village in the field of entrepreneurship and recreation in the village and its immediate surroundings.
Zwiggelte is centrally located in relation to, among other things, the radio observatory in Hooghalen, Memorial Center Camp Westerbork, Museum Village Orvelte with, among other things, sheepfold, Noorderdierenpark Emmen, Kabouterland Exloo, Open Air Museum ‘Ellert en Brammert’ in Schoonoord, Visitor Center National Park Dwingelerveld, National Dolmen Information Center in Borger, De Sprookjeshof Tynaarlo and ‘t Hoefijzer, a farm where, among other things, covered wagon rides, driving and riding holidays can be booked.
Zwiggelte itself is mainly surrounded by meadows and there are also about 1500 hectares of contiguous forestry in the area. There are several day recreation areas in the middle of the surrounding forests and also various marked walking tours, equestrian routes and cycling routes. A wide range of one- and multi-day events such as markets, festivals, music, theatre, sports and exhibitions is also offered in and around Zwiggelte.
Larger villages in the area include Westerbork and Beilen. The more built-up area is located south of Zwiggelte and north of the village are some wooded areas with hamlets, villages and communities.
